The 2017 Vintage

The 2017 vintage was yet again one of the warmest growing seasons in recorded history in the Willamette Valley. It began with a very chilly Winter with several major rain and snow events that gave way to a cool and wet early Spring.  Moderate temperatures in late Spring led to ideal growing conditions throughout the region and continued into summer. This culminated in the warmest August in recorded history.  Thankfully, the smoke from the Gorge fire did not cause any smoke taint in the finished wines.  The smoke actually helped filter the intense sunlight and protected the grapes from getting sunburn. The warm days continued into late October which allowed extended hang times with very ripe fruit. Total Degree Days for McMinnville topped out at 2559 with wineries reporting higher yields and little need for extensive hand sorting on the crush line.

Fairsing Vineyard is owned by MaryAnne and Mike McNally and is located in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA.  The elevation of 750 to 500 feet for this 38 acre vineyard has vines spaced on a VSP trellis at 7’ X one meter for a vine density of almost 2400 vines per acre.  The well-drained soils are marine based and made up of bands of silty and sandy clay loams that are mixed with gravel from ancient seabeds. We sourced a mix of Wadenswil, Dijon Clone 115, and 777 for this vintage.  The wine that we made from this vineyard is just bursting with dark cherries and blueberries and has hints of violets with abundant structure....a very exotic Pinot.

The topography of the slope varies from the homestead at the peak of the hill down to the timberline below at 500'.  The site’s macroclimate is cool, but more than adequate for full ripening. This cool climate facilitates the hang time Pinot noir needs to fully express its flavors. The growing degree days averaged 2,330 degrees yearly over the past seven growing seasons.

There is a splendid range of microclimates across the vineyard. The ideal south to southeast site aspect combines with a varied topography to create unique maturation profiles. Some vine blocks rest on top of rolling ridges, others spread across smooth steep slopes and a few blocks are nestled in sloping bowls. On summer nights, the vineyard is cooled from various directions: northwest from the Pacific Coast Range, northeast from the Columbia Gorge, and southwest from the Van Duzer Corridor.
