The 2016 Vintage

This vintage will go down as the warmest, and the earliest, growing season in recorded history in the Willamette Valley.  Moderate temperatures all spring led to ideal growing conditions throughout the summer.  This put very little pressure on the vines, producing grapes with nicely balanced chemistry at harvest time.  After a very high quality vintage like 2014 and 2015, this vintage was just as wonderful for everyone in the valley.  The warm days continued into the third week of September which allowed extended hang times with very ripe fruit.  Yields were up and the fruit arrived in immaculate condition to the winery with very little need for extensive hand sorting on the crush line.

Yates Conwill Vineyard is owned by Stephen Conwill and is located in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA.  The elevation of 450 to 350 feet for this 12 acre vineyard has vines spaced on a VSP trellis at 7’ X 4’ for a vine density of 1555 vines per acre.  The well-drained soils are marine based and made up of bands of silty and sandy clay loams that are mixed with gravel from ancient seabeds. The clusters that come from this vineyard are just bursting with dark cherries and violets and abundant structure. The topography of the slope varies from block to block with minor undulations that almost seem like swells out on the Ocean. This is a relatively warm site so it can be one of the first vineyards that we’ll pick every year.
